I will always defer to trusted professionals. Hopefully, you will have a trusted veterinarian to discuss this topic with. There are a few basic pros and cons, and my goal is to provide you with information regarding this topic so that you can make the best and most informed decision for your pet!
Articles – There are so many articles on this topic and pages devoted to this. A great way to start making your choice is to do your own investigation on the effects of neutering.
Are you prepared for your male to be around a female in heat – How would you manage your male in a scenario with a female in heat. If having puppies, are you prepared? Have the adult dogs been genetically tested, will they be a good match in height and weight. Do you have the space, time and energy to care for a litter. The AKC has some excellent tips on how to care for puppies but the most important is your purpose behind having puppies. If you aren't prepared, a litter can happen and end poorly if not done with thought and intention. Raising litters can also be very difficult and hard work.
Health Issues – If neutering, there are a reduction of certain health issues. Such as eliminating risk of testicular cancer and prostrate disorders but on the flip side the reduction of testosterone can lead to higher risks of other types of cancer and possible cognitive issues as your dog ages. Not to mention that neutering your male is a major surgy and there are risks with that as well.
Less marking and Aggression – Male who are neutered tend to mark less and all of our bernese and bernedoodles are meant as indoor dogs. Have a dog who marks your home can be very frustrating. In most cases, bernese and bernedoodles are not aggressive dogs. Getting your male neutered will reduce any sort of aggression they may have. This will lead to a very passive male.
I speak with each family prior to rehoming any puppy and we do not work with commercial breeders.
